Bruce support for Cattermole
21 Nov 2008 - 11:15:24
Steve Bruce believes Lee Cattermole will learn from his mistakes and the Wigan Athletic boss will have no qualms about handing the captaincy back to the midfielder.
Cattermole, 20, skippered the Latics in last weekend's 2-2 draw at Newcastle United before finding himself in trouble with police following an incident outside a north-east nightclub just hours later.
The Middlesbrough-born youngster was handed an on-the-spot fine for a public order offence, but Bruce believes the England Under-21 international has already learned from his mistake.
Cattermole could again wear the armband for Monday's meeting with Everton should Mario Melchiot and Emile Heskey fail to recover from injury.
"We've dealt with Lee, it's done and dusted now," Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post.
"I think the boy has to learn a lesson about certain areas of his hometown he needs to stay away from.
"He needs to realise about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I'm sure he'll have learned his lesson about keeping out of trouble. He'll be lighter in the pocket, which always helps. Let's put it this way, I don't think he'll be able to afford a pint next week!
"It's still possible Lee could be skipper against Everton if Mario and Emile are injured, although Emile could be back.
"If we have the same players out injured, then yes, I'd hand Lee the armband."
