Bruce sets Cattermole test
11 Mar 2009 - 11:46:19
Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce is hoping combative midfielder Lee Cattermole can learn from his recent mistakes.
The tough-tackling 20-year-old is poised to begin a four-match ban after being sent off for the second time this season in the recent 1-0 defeat to West Ham United.
Cattermole has also picked up nine bookings in his debut season with the Latics but, although questioning the red card, Bruce doesn't want the youngster to curb his combative style too much.
"The gap he'll leave in the team will be immense because he's been fantastic this season," Bruce the Wigan Observer. "But he has to learn from what he did the other night.
"We all know he can tackle and we all adore him for that because he will be, in my opinion, a future captain of this club. But he let himself down against West Ham.
"We won't see Catts until the end of April now and that's a long, long time. Ridiculous. But it will be worse for him. We'll just try and keep him busy, keep him active.
"It's going to be hard for us now. With him suspended and Wilson Palacios gone, we've lost a couple of driving forces in the middle of the park."
