Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that his hopes of signing Ecuador striker Cristian Benitez are fading.
The 23-year-old currently plays his football in Mexico with Santos Laguna, but is expected to head to Europe in the summer.
A number of clubs have followed his progress in the past, with Villarreal and Benfica among the parties rumoured to have showed an interest, while PSV Eindhoven are now tracking Benitez.
That has left Bruce facing an auction for the player's services which he feels he is unlikely to win.
He told The Sun: "I won't say how much they wanted, but let's just say he was much too expensive.
"He's been linked with a couple of other clubs, but we're not going to get involved in an auction.
"We'll probably keep tabs on the situation for a while longer, but we won't pay over the odds."
