Boyce: Latics gutted by defeat
03 Mar 2009 - 08:28:44
Wigan Athletic defender Emmerson Boyce admitted that he and his colleagues had been left gutted by their dramatic late 2-1 defeat at Chelsea.
Frank Lampard struck right at the death for the Blues at Stamford Bridge, with the Latics having looked like earning a point thanks to Olivier Kapo's strike.
Boyce told the Evening Post: "They beat us narrowly at our place at the beginning of the season and now they've done it again.
"Chelsea are a very good team and you have to concentrate against them for 90 minutes if you're to get anything from them.
"There was a dispute about both their goals. The referee gave a corner in the lead-up to the first goal, even though no-one from our side got a touch.
"Then it looked like there was a push on Mario Melchiot for the second goal, but the ref didn't see it.
"Hopefully these things will even themselves out over the season and we can get a decision or two going in our favour soon.
"It was a good team performance from us, but unfortunately we didn't have anything to show for it in terms of points at the end. I thought we deserved a draw, but it wasn't to be.
"With Chelsea scoring so late in the game we were really gutted in the dressing room afterwards, so was the manager. But he knows it was a good performance by us."
