Back-to-basics call by Kirkland
22 Sep 2009 - 13:08:45
Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland thinks a back-to-basics policy will serve the club well when they face Chelsea this weekend.
The Latics produced a woeful display in Saturday's 4-0 defeat at Arsenal and former Liverpool shot-stopper Kirkland accepts it was a day to forget.
"All the lads are very disappointed, but the beauty of this game is you always have another game coming up," he said. "We have to make sure we prepare right for Chelsea.
"We've got to get back to basics, and I'm sure we'll be working extremely hard on the training ground.
"Saturday was definitely a bad day for us, but there's always another day round the corner. The desire is there to do better, and put things right - and I'm sure we will.
"It's horrible being a goalkeeper on a day like that, but that's part and parcel of the job. That's why you do it. You have to take the ups with the downs.
"Four goals was bad enough, though - no goalkeeper likes letting four goals in. It's a very disappointing day for us all, and no-one really did themselves any favours.
"We all under-performed, every single one of us, and it wasn't good enough as a team. It's difficult playing against the Big Four, because they're all such good sides.
"But if we play like we did on Saturday, then we're going to make it easy for anybody to play against us - not just the top sides."
