Attwell call angers Scharner
01 Apr 2010 - 16:25:47
Wigan Athletic midfielder Paul Scharner has admitted Monday's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City is still hurting him.
Roberto Matinez's Latics went down at Eastlands, but the game swung City's way following the contentious dismissal of defender Gary Caldwell.
Referee Stuart Attwell issued a controversial red card to the Scottish centre-back after he crashed into Carlos Tevez.
To add insult to injury, it was the diminutive Argentina star who went on to score a hat-trick.
Caldwell will now miss the upcoming Fulham, Portsmouth and Arsenal fixtures after the club refused to appeal the decision.
Scharner could move into a more defensive role to plug the gap and he is still frustrated at the manner of the setback.
Speaking to the Wigan Post, he said: "I never got the feeling we might lose the game until Gary was sent off and the first goal went in.
"We had done really well in keeping them away from our goal, and we looked very dangerous in front of their goal.
"There was absolutely no reason for us to lose that game, and that's why it is so frustrating.
"We were playing so well until the red card, and for me it's clear that the referee decided the game.
"Gary clearly came in from the front and not the back, he used only one foot and he also played the ball.
"It was a very harsh decision from the referee. That was the breaking point for us, and after that it was impossible for us to get back in the game.
"The main moment in the game was absolutely the wrong decision from the referee."
