Wigan Athletic have secured the services of the 'best goalkeeper in Europe' after agreeing a new long-term contract with Chris Kirkland.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan revealed his admiration for the England keeper after he put pen to paper on a new four-year deal at the JJB Stadium.
Kirkland originally joined the club on loan from Liverpool before securing a permanent move in summer 2006.
"Chris is the best goalkeeper ever to wear a Wigan Athletic shirt," a delighted Whelan told the club's official website.
"He is not the best goalkeeper in England, he is the best in Europe!"
Meanwhile after keeping 20 clean sheets in 64 appearances, manager Steve Bruce is also pleased with his first signing of the summer.
He added: "I could not be more pleased to have Chris commit his future to Wigan Athletic.
"I knew Chris was a good goalkeeper before I joined, but until I had worked with him I didn't realise just how good he actually is.
"People ask me about transfer targets and who is coming in, but someone of Kirky's calibre signing this new deal is a massive boost for the club and is an excellent foundation to continue building for next season."
