Wigan Athletic have confirmed that January recruit Erik Edman faces around six months out of action due to a serious knee injury sustained in the 3-1 defeat at
Blackburn Rovers.
The 29-year-old Sweden left-back had to be carried off shortly before half-time at Ewood Park, having fallen awkwardly after an aerial clash with Rovers striker Jason Roberts.
Edman's injury has been confirmed as a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and he will return to his homeland in the near future to undergo surgery to correct the problem.
Latics manager Steve Bruce told the club's official website: "It's a real shame because Eric has looked so natural and we will certainly miss him.
"He's also a lovely lad and a terrific professional, but he'll get over this and be back for us, I'm sure. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best."
Bruce had said straight after the Rovers loss: "I think the injury to Erik affected us really badly as he's been rock solid since he came here, when he went off we lost that balance."
Edman joined the Latics from French club Rennes in January, having earlier played in England with Tottenham Hotspur.
