Wigan Athletic manager Steve Bruce has tipped Andreas Granqvist to return to the club a better player after allowing the 22-year-old defender to join Helsingborgs on loan until the end of the season.
Granqvist has failed to start a Premier League match since December and has made only 17 appearances for the Latics since moving to the JJB Stadium, initially on loan in January 2007.
He made the loan switch permanent last summer.
"This is by no means the end of the road for Andreas as far as this club is concerned," Bruce told Wigan's official website.
"He's a good young player with plenty of potential.
"However, with the European Championships coming up in the summer, he needs first-team action to have a chance of getting in the Sweden squad.
"The way our defence is performing at the moment, and with the competition for places we have here presently, he would in all probability not get what he needs if he stayed in terms of first-team action.
"We felt it was the fairest option for him to allow this move to go ahead."
