Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell is relieved to have discovered that influential captain Arjan De Zeeuw did not suffer any serious damage to his knee during Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Liverpool.

The former Portsmouth defender jarred his knee in the Anfield clash and went to see a specialist to investigate if any long-term damage had been caused.

However, Jewell told the club's official website: "The results of the scan have shown good news.

"The injury is certainly more short-term than long-term and most importantly there is no permanent damage. We are very pleased with the results.

"However, he still got an injury that will require physio treatment throughout the week.

"It's too early at this stage to say whether he'll be fit for the weekend's match at Chelsea, it's one we'll be keeping an eye on that's for sure."

De Zeeuw has been an ever-present in the Premiership for the Latics so far this season, forming a solid central defensive partnership with Stephane Henchoz.
