Wigan Athletic midfielder Michael Brown believes competition within the squad will help preserve the club's top-flight status.

Brown has been thrilled with manager Steve Bruce's acquisitions since arriving at the club earlier this season, with the likes of Wilson Palacios, Erik Hagen, Erik Edman and Marlon King all bolstering the squad during the January transfer window.

"If you look around the team now, I don't think anyone's place is secure in any position," he told the club's official website.

"We all understand that if we drop our performance levels, there's a very good player snapping at our heals to get in the team, which is the way it should be."

Meanwhile, Brown claims the Latics will not be over-awed by the visit of Arsenal to the JJB Stadium on Sunday.

"We go into the Arsenal game as underdogs, but I can promise you that every one in the team on Sunday will step on to the pitch with the belief that we can win," he continued.

"We know we're playing a great team, but whatever happens we want to make them know that they've been in a game."
