Wigan V Blackburn at The DW Stadium : Match Preview

18 November 2011 16:19
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is convinced his players' experience of last season's relegation battle will help them pull away from trouble again.

Martinez's side are bottom of the Barclays Premier League with just five points after losing their last eight games. The Spaniard admits the situation is a concern but, ahead of Saturday`s vital clash against fellow strugglers Blackburn, he retains the utmost confidence.

Martinez said: "Morale is good because I would say we have been in this situation time after time. "We have got the right characters in the dressing room and we know how to face adversity. "These are situations we want to get out of. Not because of the run of defeats, that is just a stat. It is just the lack of points.

"That is something we never expected, especially if you look at the level of our performances. "We can change it around quickly and we have got the right personalities and talent in the dressing room to get the points we need and achieve our aim."

Like Blackburn, Wigan beat the drop only on the final day of last season in May. Having been written off by many prior to that, Martinez emerged with his reputation enhanced and was targeted by Aston Villa over the summer. The 38-year-old resisted those overtures to remain loyal to Athletic and chairman Dave Whelan rewarded him with a new contract.

Whelan's faith in Martinez does not appear to have wavered despite this season's poor results but, even if it did, the Latics boss would not let speculation bother him.

Martinez said: "Any manager would tell you we cannot lose any time or waste any energy thinking about what could happen and what would be a specific scenario.

"All your focus is on the next game. "In the last few games we have been losing points because of small margins and we need to concentrate on that. I am excited and look forward to the challenge. "I think it is a very tough period and we need to find the solutions."

Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz misses out through suspension but captain Gary Caldwell returns from his ban.

Blackburn manager Steve Kean insists the club's owners have kept all their promises during their first year. A year to the day they were taken over by Indian poultry giants Venky's, Blackburn take on Wigan with defeat for either side likely to intensify a Lancashire crisis.

Discontented Rovers fans have targeted Kean in protest this season and are now turning against the owners. Kean, however, believes that Blackburn have been cursed by bad luck, are close to turning the season around - and that Venky's have fulfilled their side of the bargain.

He said: "Anything I have ever asked for in any transfer window has always been delivered. I think when we are trying to build a young team maybe you are not going to pick up as many points as a more, senior older team but I think we are improving and the owners know that as well. "Any promises they made to me as far as allowing budget, any time I have asked for a player to be re-signed or if I wanted any backing in bringing a player to the club - none more so than Scott Dann on deadline day for a sizeable amount of money - that has been delivered.

"They are very involved, they watch the games, they enjoy coming over and spending time at the stadium and at the training ground, meeting the players. "The players then went out to India and enjoyed meeting them on a personal level. I think every member of the team and the staff know what they are about now and have a personal relationship with them which I think is unique." Kean has told his players to not even contemplate going for a draw at the DW Stadium, especially with Wigan on a run of eight consecutive defeats.

He added: "We've said to the lads, let's look positive, let's not even think about a draw, let's go and get an away victory. "We feel already that we should have beaten Norwich away and we are slightly disappointed it was only a point at QPR. "There are group of games coming up with lots of points we can be putting on the board." Chris Samba (hamstring) is touch and go for Blackburn but Scott Dann and Michel Salgado are ready to return after spells on the sidelines. Simon Vukcevic is missing after suffering a badly-broken nose on international duty with Montenegro.
