Wigan target Newcastle's Nicky Butt

Like Michael Owen, Butt's contract is up at the end of the season, and amid the turmoil that has surrounded Newcastle United this season, the club's board are yet to open any negotiations about his future. [LNB]The lack of security this leaves the former England midfielder with will no doubt prompt him to listen to what Bruce has to offer depsite having made no public indication that he wants to leave Newcastle. [LNB]I would not be the first time since Bruce's playing days ended that the two have worked together, and past experiences could prove negative for Bruce should Butt decide to make a January move. [LNB]After signing with Newcastle from Manchester United in 2004 for £2.5 million, Butt's first season was marred by injuries which resulted in manager at the time Graeme Souness loaning him to Birmingham City. [LNB]Bruce was in charge of the now League One side at the time, and Butt famously walked out on him after hearing that Alex Bruce - Steve's son - was put in the squad ahead of him. [LNB]For Newcastle meanwhile, the prospect of losing Butt could, in the long run, prove more damaging to Newcastle than if Owen were to leave given Joe Kinnear's lack of options in midfield. [LNB]Butt has been one of Newcastle's most influential players in recent seasons. Since joining he has made 98 appearances scoring five times and when Scott Parker faced a lengthy lay off with injury he took over as captain. [LNB]According to the Star[LNB], Wigan will face competition from their North-West rivals Bolton, with both clubs prepared to offer the 33-year-old a two-year contract. [LNB]
