Roberto Martinez has hit out at England for snubbing Chris Kirkland.

Wigan goalkeeper Kirkland had an eventful Saturday against Burnley, recovering from being struck by a missile thrown from the crowd to pull off a vital save on the way to a last-gasp 1-0 win.

England boss Fabio Capello has persistently ignored Kirkland, who has just one cap for his country. Yet the 28-year-old former Liverpool goalkeeper has kept seven clean sheets this season in a side that has struggled in a relegation battle.

Left in the cold: Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has been overlooked in the England No 1 reckoning

Martinez feels that Kirkland's club performances are being strangely overlooked. The Spaniard said: 'Maybe the fact he is not being considered for England comes from the England camp because I cannot understand it. If you look at the standard of his performances - week in, week out - it is up there with the best in England.
