Match Preview

Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers lock horns in a north-west derby clash on Wednesday evening as both teams look to enhance their chances of avoiding relegation this season.

Bolton currently sit second from bottom after a miserable season so far with Wigan just two points better off and three places above their close rivals.

Separated by just eight miles, a typical ferocious derby clash is likely to stir local passions and, with Owen Coyle stamping his mark on the Trotters, he will be striving to grab his first away-day win since taking over at the Reebok Stadium helm.

Roberto Martinez's Latics have failed to win any of their last four Premier League fixtures, picking up just two points in this dismal run.

With home advantage, and as Bolton have won just twice on the road all season, they need to make it count.

However, Wigan's home form is mediocre. They have picked up maximum points on just three occasions from their 11 matches on their own patch.

On the injury front, young Scotland midfielder James McCarthy is likely to miss the game with a hamstring injury.

Coyle has several problems ahead of the midweek fixture with no fewer than six first-team players missing out.

Joey O'Brien (knee) is sidelined for the season and fellow knee victim Chris Basham, who limped out of last week's 2-0 loss at Manchester City, remains in the treatment room.

Gary Cahill is also expected to be out of for some time after a blot clot developed in his arm although it was recently revealed he may return to action before the end of the current campaign.

Ivan Klasnic (calf) is still a week away from a return but Sean Davis (knee) and Gavin McCann (ankle) remain other long-term absentees.
