Wigan up and running

Wigan got their season up and running with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe at the DW Stadium.

Having failed to win any of their first three fixtures, Latics showed why they are so hotly tipped for promotion with Will Grigg converting an early penalty and Donervon Daniels and Craig Davies opening their accounts for the club.

They got off to the perfect start in the third minute when neither David Mirfin or Jack King took charge at the back and the latter pulled Grigg down by the shirt, with the Northern Ireland international stepping up to coolly stroke home the spot-kick.

Full debutant Davies, lining up alongside Grigg in attack, was proving a handful and he chased down a cross-field ball before dinking a right-footed try just over the crossbar.

Moments later the hosts had a second. Again the Iron's defending was poor as they failed to deal with Michael Jacobs' free-kick and Daniels rammed home the loose ball in the 27th minute.

Wigan were serving up their best home performance in a year and almost had a third before the break but Joe Anyon made a fine one-handed save from Davies and Jacobs scissor-kicked the rebound against the crossbar.

David Perkins then fired just wide of the target as Gary Caldwell's men pushed for another goal that eventually came with 20 minutes to go.

Grigg sliced a brilliant through ball for Davies to run on to and smash beyond Anyon to round off a satisfying night for the hosts.
