Barnsley book League One play-off place with win at champions Wigan

Barnsley gatecrashed Wigan's Sky Bet League One promotion party by winning 4-1 and securing their own play-off spot.

Will Grigg's 28th goal of the season had put the Latics ahead with only nine minutes gone, after good work down the left by Yanic Wildschut.

But that was as good as it got for the champions-elect as the Tykes gradually took over and ended the regular season in fine style.

The equaliser came from the penalty spot on 32 minutes, when Stephen Warnock fouled Ashley Fletcher and Sam Winnall sent Lee Nicholls the wrong way.

Winnall then put Barnsley ahead just before the interval from close range after Nicholls had denied Lloyd Isgrove.

It was 3-1 just before the hour mark when Fletcher supplied Conor Hourihane, whose shot deflected in past Nicholls. Josh Brownhill made it four in the final quarter with a superb free-kick from 25 yards. And Wigan's misery was compounded when Chris McCann was given a straight red card in stoppage time.
