El Khayati strike stuns Wigan

Abdenasser El Khayati scored the only goal 15 minutes from time as Burton inflicted a first home League One defeat on fellow promotion-chasers Wigan.

Wigan had leapfrogged Burton to go fourth at the weekend, but the Brewers returned the favour by edging a disappointing encounter at the DW Stadium.

The visitors had shaded the first half without really testing goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who was looking for a stadium-record sixth successive shut-out on home soil.

Wigan came out flying after the break and threw everything at their visitors, with Tim Chow coming close with a header and Michael Jacobs having a free-kick deflected over.

However, just as the home side looked on the verge of a breakthrough, Burton hit them with a lightning-fast counter-attack.

Substitute Timmy Thiele did all the work down the left-hand side, carrying the ball half the length of the field at great pace.

His cross was a beauty and El Khayati slotted the ball past Jaaskelainen to silence the home fans.

Wigan had a chance to level with five minutes to go but Max Power's shot found team-mate Reece James and he fired against the outside of a post from close range.
