Tom Aldred boosts Blackpool to rare away victory at Wigan

Tom Aldred scored the only goal as struggling Blackpool enjoyed a 1-0 Sky Bet League One victory over north-west neighbours Wigan.

He was in the right place at the right time to nod past Jussi Jaaskelainen, thus inflicting a second home league defeat in a row on the hosts.

Blackpool started as the stronger side and Hayden White had a shot inside the opening five minutes that deflected only just over the bar.

Wigan had another let-off nine minutes before half-time when Leon Barnett headed inches wide of his own goal from David Ferguson's corner.

From the resulting set-piece from Ferguson, Aldred made no mistake with a free header from eight yards out.

Will Grigg fired wide as Wigan attempted to restore parity before the break.

And the Northern Ireland international saw another effort superbly tipped over midway through the second half.

Despite enjoying the bulk of the possession in the Blackpool half, Wigan never really looked to be on the verge of levelling the scores.

Substitute Michael Jacobs showed some nice touches inside the final quarter but the visitors, for whom ex-Wigan captain Emmerson Boyce made a late appearance, held on for a rare away win.
