Blackburn overcome Elliott Bennett red card to hold Wigan to goalless draw

Blackburn overcame the second-half sending-off of Elliott Bennett to hang on for a 0-0 draw at Sky Bet League One promotion rivals Wigan.

Bennett picked up his second booking after 58 minutes for simulation, but Wigan were unable to take full advantage against 10 men.

The closest they came was when Gavin Massey hit the bar from just outside the penalty area, but the visitors will feel they were good value for their point after defending resolutely.

Michael Jacobs had come closest to breaking the deadlock for Wigan in a disappointing first half when he headed Callum Elder's cross wide of the far post.

Massey ought to have done better just before the interval, only to fire straight at David Raya from a great position.

Thankfully the second period was a far more entertaining affair, with both sides having chances to win it.

Bradley Dack headed wide and then volleyed over for Rovers, both from 10 yards, before hopes of an away win were dashed by the dismissal of Bennett.

As Wigan pressed, Elder forced a good save from Raya after great work from Nick Powell, before Massey's shot beat the goalkeeper but not the upright.

Despite their dominance, Wigan were almost caught on the counter, and were grateful for Danny Graham fluffing a simple final ball that would have sent fellow substitute Harry Chapman clean through on Jamie Jones' goal.
