Whelan is now 75 years old and under no illusion that he isn't getting any younger. However the foremr JJB owner and present DW Sports Fitness boss has insisted that so long as he is fit and healthy he will remain in charge.
Speaking exclusively to the Wigan Observer, Whelan said: "I will do what I can, while I can. As long as I'm fit - and I am fighting fit at the moment - and working hard and loving it, I will stay for as long as I possibly can.
"I can't stay forever. There will come a time when age stops me travelling, doing all kinds of other things, starts affecting my thinking.
"But in the meantime, I am in the office everyday, and I am loving every single day.
"If I am healthy, in body and mind, I will continue because I love it. And I will be staying at Wigan Athletic for as long as I possibly can.
"It's my life. Everything I have, I got from football and I owe the game everything - that an the Wigan Boys and Girls Club."
There have been suggestions that Whelan was looking to hand over the reigns to his grandson David Sharpe who is now the boss at Sharpy's Fish and Chip Restaurant just a stones throw from the DW Stadium.
