Fans who wanted Wigan to sack manager Roberto Martinez last season have not been forgotten by club chairman Dave Whelan.[LNB] Some Latics supporters were calling for the head of Martinez while the team were sitting in the bottom three of the Premier League.[LNB]Whelan not only stood by the Spaniard but insists he would have left the club as well had Martinez buckled under the pressure. [LNB]Martinez repaid his chairman's loyalty when he refused to join Aston Villa after the Midlands club made him their top target to replace Gerard Houllier before appointing Alex McLeish.[LNB]"It was only six months ago that we had people in the crowd asking for him to get the sack, don't forget that," Whelan said. [LNB]"He's done a first-class job since the day he arrived. It upsets you and I would have gone with Roberto, no question. [LNB]"I think the people have now realised how good a manager he is."
