Ben Watson is delighted to have signed a new contract with Wigan Athletic and is hoping the Latics can beat QPR this weekend. The 26-year-old had an up and down week for the Latics, after missing a penalty against Swansea before sealing his new three-year contract.

But Watson is looking forward with optimism, and can't wait for the clash with newly promoted Queens Park Rangers, a club Watson used to play for, at the weekendSpeaking about his new deal, the midfield man told the club's official website: "It didn't take very long to agree the new deal and I'm delighted it's all sorted now.

"I've had a couple of good years here and I couldn't wait to commit my future to the club once I knew the Gaffer wanted to discuss matters with me."Regarding the showdown with his former employers at the DW Stadium he said: "We've got two points from two games we felt we should have won, but that's a far cry from this time last season when we'd played two, lost two and on minus ten goals.

"So there's been a massive improvement since then and if we can get three points this Saturday then it'll be fantastic start to the season."
