Scharner still upset by Caldwell red

Wigan midfielder Paul Scharner is still struggling to deal with Stuart Attwell's decision to send off Gary Caldwell at Manchester City.[LNB] Latics were beaten 3-0 at Eastlands on Monday night, conceding all three goals after Attwell issued a controversial red card to Caldwell following a tackle on Carlos Tevez.[LNB]Caldwell will now miss Wigan's next three games against Fulham, Portsmouth and Arsenal respectively, with Scharner likely switching to a central defensive role in his absence.[LNB]The Austria international admits to being frustrated by Monday's result, which he feels does not reflect Latics' performance.[LNB]"I never got the feeling we might lose the game until Gary was sent off and the first goal went in," he told the Wigan Post.[LNB]"We had done really well in keeping them away from our goal, and we looked very dangerous in front of their goal.[LNB]"There was absolutely no reason for us to lose that game, and that's why it is so frustrating.[LNB]"The main moment in the game was absolutely the wrong decision from the referee.[LNB]"I couldn't sleep on Monday night actually. I was just lying there searching for reasons why we lost the game."[LNB]Scharner, who has been linked with a move to Fulham when his current deal expires, says Wigan must now focus on winning as many games as possible in the run-in.[LNB]"We have to look to get as many points as possible - not just looking to get four or five but to go for all 18," he said.[LNB]"If we can get 18 points, we will be totally safe, and that should be our target."[LNB]Roberto Martinez said: "He explained the reason was it was a two-footed challenge.[LNB]"I don't understand that. I cannot take that - it clearly didn't happen.[LNB]"Being a referee is tough and you have to make a split-second decision but the reasoning of that decision I cannot understand and that is what all the problems have been around.[LNB]"Obviously since then the report gives a completely different explanation of the challenge.[LNB]"What it says is it was a challenge using excessive force, which contradicts his first reasoning of the red card.[LNB]"We need to go with the report and we cannot appeal against that report because we are risking further punishment and losing Gary for four games.[LNB]"We are going to get punished twice now. We got punished on the night and now we are going to get punished by losing Gary for three games.[LNB]"That is where I never felt we were treated fairly."[LNB]Martinez has been asked by the Football Association to explain his post-match comments about Attwell.[LNB]He has until April 6 to respond and he hopes he will avoid a disciplinary charge by giving the full picture.[LNB]Martinez said: "Sometimes the context of a word, unless you explain the whole situation, can be confusing. We will make sure everything is clear for the FA."[LNB]Martinez, meanwhile, has admitted an interest in 22-year-old Hamilton midfielder James McArthur.[LNB]Latics signed McArthur's former team-mate James McCarthy, 19, last summer.[LNB]He said: "He is a great talent whose achievements at Hamilton in the SPL [Scottish Premier League] have been remarkable.[LNB]"But there are a lot of players we are looking at, and I'm sure there will be much more over the coming weeks and months."[LNB]Martinez also confirmed Rachid Bouaouzan, Joe Holt and Jon Routledge have joined Swedish clubs on loan.[LNB]Dutchman Bouaouzan, 26, will play for Helsingborg until his contract expires at the end of the season while Holt and Routledge, both 20, have joined Ostersunds in the hope of gaining first-team experience.
