Newcastle Reaction: Martinez left frustrated

Latics boss Roberto Martinez was left frustrated following his sides defeat to Newcastle this weekend.

The Spaniard's team put up a creditable performance and stifled Newcastle for the majority of the game. However the telling moment came in the 80th minute as Cabaye fired home the winner from 20 yards.

Momo Diame, Victor Moses, and Hugo Rodallega all had good changes for the Latics who did more than stifle. On another day the Latics could have easily come away with all three points.

Speaking about the game to the club's official website, Martinez said: "To get beat with a goal that came ten minutes from the end is very difficult to take, especially when it was probably their only clear chance of the game."We knew it was going to be a very difficult place to come but I though we neutralised Newcastle today, we're just very disappointed that we couldn't get the result that the performance deserved.

"The margins are very small and I feel this squad is getting stronger. You look at the players that came into the side today and they looked really sharp which is a great sign."The only performance in the last five or six games that we were not happy with was the loss at Manchester City. Every other game we were not far away from getting a result. Last week we made three mistakes which cost us the game. Today we were much better in that respect."

Martinez felt paarticularly frustrated not to see his team awarded a first half penalty as Momo Diame was fouled in the Newcastle area, only to see claims waved away by the referee.

"When you are in a run of poor results it's fair to say that key decisions become very important. Mohamed Diame's situation in the first half was clearly a free-kick and I even thought it was in the penalty area when it happened. To not even get a free kick was very disappointing," added MArtinez."They really support their side here at St. James' Park and you need a really strong referee. Unfortunately today we were not going to get anything in that respect, which is very frustrating."
