McClean completes Latics switch

Wigan have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland international winger James McClean from Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

McClean becomes Latics' 10th signing of the summer, joining the likes of Grant Holt and Leon Barnett in moving from Premier League clubs, as boss Owen Coyle bids to return the FA Cup holders to the top flight at the first attempt.

The winger has earned 12 international caps with his country and joins fellow Irish midfielder James McCarthy at the DW Stadium.

Wigan confirmed McClean passed his medical on Wednesday and inked terms on a three-year deal on Thursday morning.

"I'm delighted to be signing, it's happened very quickly but as soon as I found out the gaffer was interested I wanted to come," said McClean.

"You can see this is a club moving in the right direction again and I can't wait to be a part of that.

"I know James McCarthy very well and he's said only good things about the place so I'm really looking forward to getting started and meeting everyone."

McClean burst on to the scene under then-Black Cats boss Martin O'Neill in 2011 and scored his first goal for the club against Wigan.

However, he has found himself marginalised under current manager Paolo Di Canio, paving the way for his switch to Latics.
