Roberto Martinez has claimed that ames McCarthy was the target of underhand tactics from Manchester United in the recent game between the two sides. The 20 year old midfielder has been in impressive form since returning from injury for the Latics and Roberto Martinez has no doubts that McCarthy was targetted by Ferguson's side. Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, the Latics boss said: "What is clear is that James was targeted by Manchester United's players, who tried to stop him being effective in the game. "He has to take that as a compliment - to be recognised like that is something he totally deserves. But he is focused only on his football now, and winning games for Wigan Athletic." McCarthy put in another impressive performance for the Latics and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet shortly after United scored their opening goal. The former Hamilton midfielder also showed outstanding maturity when faced with the elbow assault from the classless Wayne Rooney. Despite being just 20 years of age, McCarthy walked away from the incident and left the United superstar floundering in a sea of his own arrogance and self importance.
