McCarthy receives Ireland call

23 February 2010 08:16
Nineteen year old midfielder James McCarthy has been called up to the Republic of Ireland national team for their friendly fixture with Brazil on March 2nd. The youngster has been in a rich vein of form and has impressed significantly in the Wigan Athletic first team since starting the FA Cup third round tie against Hull City back in January. He bagged a goal that day and put in a man of the match performance. It is unsurprising that the hardworking young midfielder has received the call from Giovanni Trapattoni. Meanwhile, Victor Moses has been called up to the England under 21 international squad for their fixture with Greece on March 3rd. And last but not least, Gary Caldwell is included in the Scotland full national squad for their match with the Czech Republic next week. Also included in that squad is former Latic Lee McCulloch who had previously refused to play under former Scotland manager George Burley. Speaking to the club's official website, Latics boss Roberto Martinez said: "This is great news for the club. James and Victor are part of the backbone of our team going forwards into the future, two of the brightest young talents in the game, and it is a huge boost and honour for them personally and for the club to be recognised in this way." "Gary is a leader on and off the field and we will benefit from his experience when he represents his country." CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
