McCarthy heads absentee list for Wigan

Wigan are without midfielder James McCarthy for the Carling Cup fourth-round tie against Swansea. The Republic of Ireland international suffered an ankle injury in Saturday's clash against Bolton that could sideline him for up to 10 weeks. Defender Emmerson Boyce is also out with a hamstring problem but Steven Gohouri could return. Gary Caldwell is unlikely to be risked as he continues his recovery from double hip surgery while on-loan Manchester United player Tom Cleverley is ineligible. Manager Roberto Martinez must decide whether to retain Chris Kirkland in goal or recall Ali Al Habsi, who did not play against parent club Bolton.
