Wigan Athletic's Republic of Ireland intnerational midiflelder James McCarthy is a doubt for this weekend's fixture with Bolton Wanderers after suffering a bout of tonsilitis.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez has revealed that the 20 year old midfielder spent much of the international break fighting tonsilitis and was forced to miss both of the Republic's fixtures.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Martinez said: "James is feeling after his bout of tonsillitis. He was in bed for 24 hours, which stopped him playing for the Republic of Ireland, and we need to assess him in the next 24 hours.

“Tonsillitis can take a lot out of you as a player, out of your body, and we need him to be fully fit and ready to play.”

The former Hamilton midfielder is now a doubt for the fixture. James McArthur, also formerly of Hamilton, is on standby to replace the Irishman.
