The Latics almost paid for their dismal start ot he season last year and it is no surprise that midfielder James McArthur is targetting a better start this time around.

The Scottish international midfielder was instrumental in the closing success the Latics enjoyed at the back end of last season.

Now the former Hamilton midfielder is hoping the Latics can hit the ground running at the start of the new season.

Speaking to the Wigan Observer, McArthur said: “We need to build on the momentum we finished last year and make sure we hit the ground running next season.

“It was an excellent finish to the campaign but the challenge now is to start well and make sure we don’t put ourselves in the position where we need to pull something like that out of the bag.”
