McArthur boosts Wigan's survival bid

Wigan midfielder James McArthur boosted his side's bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League as his late strike clinched a vital 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Bolton on Saturday.

Roberto Martinez's team remain bottom of the table but McArthur's 75th minute goal means they are now just two points from safety after starting the day five points adrift.

Gary Caldwell had put Wigan ahead just before half-time and, although Mark Davies equalised for Bolton in the second half, McArthur's winner means Wanderers dropped to second bottom.

Wigan came close to grabbing an early lead when Victor Moses skipped between two defenders before lashing a shot into the side netting.

Zat Knight scooped over the bar for Bolton and Franco Di Santo screwed a long-range effort over for Wigan in response.

The visitors broke the deadlock two minutes from the break when Jean Beausejour sent in a corner from the left and Caldwell rose to head home.

At half-time Wanderers boss Owen Coyle replaced Martin Petrov with Japanese teenager Ryo Miyaichi, on loan from Arsenal, but it was the visitors who continued to press forward.

Di Santo was denied a penalty at the start of the second half when he fell under Knight's challenge in the box and Emmerson Boyce also had an appeal rejected after tussling with Miyaichi.

After promising work from Miyaichi, Bolton finally crafted their first shot on target in the 61st minute when David Wheater's low drive was gathered by Ali Al Habsi.

And they snatched an equaliser six minutes later when Bogdan's goal kick deflected off David Ngog and fell to Davies, who crashed his left-foot shot into the top corner.

Miyaichi had his moments in the inevitable storm that followed, but Bolton paid the price for more sloppy defending in the 76th minute as Wigan regained the lead.

Sam Ricketts' attempted back header gave Moses a clear run on goal on the left and when his shot struck Bogdan it rebounded to McArthur to follow up into the net.

Miyaichi came close to grabbing a dramatic equaliser on 85 minutes when he lashed a low shot goalwards but he was denied by Al Habsi.
