Martinez worried over Di Santo injury

Roberto Martinez has admitted he is worried about the injury sustained by Franco Di Santo in the 0-0 draw with Birmingham City at the weekend. The 22 year old striker was subsituted after the red card tackle from Birmingham's Craig Gardner. The former Aston Villa midfielder went over the ball in a nasty tackle on Di Santo. Now the former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker looks set for a spell on the sidelines, just weeks after joining the Latics. Latics boss Roberto Martinez has admitted he fears there may be ligament damage, particularly given the way the injury has swelled up. He told the Wigan Evening Post: “I think it’s further damage. The cut has swelled up straight away and it could be a little bit of ligament damage in his ankle and that is the worry. “Obviously it was a very strong challenge. From where I was, his leading foot was really high and then he gets the ball with his second foot. Nowadays if you go into a challenge like that and it’s a bit high, it’s a reckless challenge with excessive force and a red card. “I just saw Franco Di Santo’s leg and that’s my worry. I need to see the extent of that injury. Franco had to come off and obviously he’s got a couple of nasty cuts on his leg. “The challenge was really high. The red card was really late in the game and I don’t think that it influenced the game from that point on. The referee had a clear view and he was really on top of the incident. My worry is the extent of the injury.” Di Santo is very unlikely to be fit to face Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend at the DW Stadium and supporters will hope the injury is none to serious after Di Santo's bright start to his Wigan Athletic career.
