Martinez - We need belief

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says his side have shown too much respect to 'big four' sides in the past. The Latics take on Chelsea at the DW Stadium on Saturday on the back of a 4-0 drubbing by Arsenal, and Martinez insists his side can bounce back and cause an upset. Since their promotion to the Premier League in 2005, Wigan have only managed a measly four points out of 102 against Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, with just four draws from 34 games. "I think we have given them too much respect," said Martinez. "It is no coincidence we have played 34 games against them - a huge number of games - and not beaten them. It is a staggering statistic. "It is more than the fitness of tactical and technical aspects, it is the psychological approach to the game which is something we needed to change. "We need to be stronger mentally because that will allow our football to challenge the team on the pitch." The Latics face a tough test if they are going to change their fortunes against Chelsea, with Carlo Ancelotti's league leaders winning all six of their Premier League games so far. But Martinez says Wigan must believe they can win and continue to do what they do week in week out. "You shouldn't perform in a different way just because you are playing the top four," he added. "If you perform in the same way and they are better than you then we'll take that but we shouldn't give the game to another side just because of their name or reputation. "The two lessons we have to learn are not to give too much respect to the opposition and to believe in ourselves more."
