Martinez values Whelan advice

A lot is often made of the relationship between a football manager and his chairman and Latics fans will be pleased to know that Martinez enjoys the advice he gets from his chairman. Dave Whelan is somewhat of a special case as he has played the game and has experienced all four divisions during his time. This inside knowledge perhaps makes him the perfect chairman to work for. Speaking about his relationship with Whelan to the Wigan Evening Post, Roberto Martinez said: “I have never had interference from the chairman. I have had his opinion, which is very, very different. “Mr Whelan is the only man who has played in all four divisions of the English league and then been chairman in all four divisions. That means his opinion is very useful.” “Football is a game of opinions, and I take them all on board. I listen to the opinion of everyone – even the taxi driver taking me to a game. “But at the same time I’m very stubborn in my ways and, as I have said many times, I would rather die on my feet than walk in on my knees. “I am very clear in what I want to do and the way I want to play, and I will never change that. But I’ll always listen to the chairman’s opinion, because it’s worth listening to.” CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
