Martinez still believes in Boselli

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has backed flop striker Mauro Boselli to make a big impact at the DW Stadium this season.

The Argentinian reportedly cost the Latics more than £6million when he arrived from Estudiantes in the summer of 2010 but he has made only 14 appearances for the club, with his two goals both coming in the League Cup.

"Mauro's attitude has been tremendous. He wants to play games, he wants to be ready to help the team, and that's a real sign of maturity. Over the course of the season, he's going to be very important," said Martinez.

The 27-year-old struggled to adapt to life in England and spent a spell on loan at Genoa in Italy in 2011 before heading back to Estudiantes last season.

But he has now returned to Lancashire and has been a regular in the Wigan squad this season, scoring in the Capital One Cup victory over Nottingham Forest in August.

He has been kept off the pitch in the Barclays Premier League by the form of Franco Di Santo and Arouna Kone, but Martinez is confident Boselli's time will come.

The Wigan boss added: "When he came back Mauro made his views very clear that he wanted to be successful with Wigan Athletic.

"He's been working really well and we've got very strong competition in those forward positions."
