Wigan manager Roberto Martinez believes his new approach will pay dividends this season.
The Spaniard's system will get its first test on Saturday when his side face Aston Villa.
He told wiganlatics.co.uk: "We have introduced a completely different style of play. We are allowing the player to think more about their own decisions during the game.
"I have seen their reaction and they are starting to take responsibility for themselves.
"They are looking strong and that's going to give us a chance of being as good as we can this season."
