Wigan boss Roberto Martinez believes his squad is in good shape ahead of their Barclays Premier League opener against Aston Villa. Before his move to the north west this summer, the Spaniard was renowned for the fluid performances of his Swansea team, a playing style he hopes to introduce at the DW Stadium. Although Martinez admitted he would like to make some more additions to the squad before the end of the transfer window, he said the signs were encouraging after the -1 triumph over St Mirren in a friendly on Saturday. "There's been a lot of work over the pre-season and it's all been towards the season opener on Saturday. We're all getting very excited and looking forward to Aston Villa," Martinez told www.wiganlatics.co.uk. "We want to keep strengthening our squad before then, sharpening up the partnerships on the field and making sure everyone is fit. "Against St Mirren we showed the progression we've been making and you can see that we're slowly reaching the levels we want to be at. There's a lot of things to look at from the game about where we can improve and that's just what we'll look to do. "Overall, when we're in possession we want to enjoy our football and want the fans to enjoy watching Wigan Athletic and I think that's something we're achieving."
