Martinez going nowhere

Latics boss Roberto Martinez insists he has a project to finish here at Wigan Athletic and will not be leaving as long as Dave Whelan is the chairman.

The Spaniard has seen his side show a severe revival in form over the past few months and the Latics are now in the box seat with regards to Premier League survival.

There were some unsettling press rumours last week that Martinez was to leave the club in the summer but he has moved to quash these by saying: "I will only leave if the chairman decides to go because we have an agreement that I will stay here and finish the project here.

"I enjoy working with him and we have a great relationship based on respect.

"It is true that having a chairman like the one we have got brings stability to the club and that helps a manager to do what he needs to do and that is an advantage.

"The real advantage of our chairman is he has played the game and is hands-on in running the football club.

"He knows short-term targets and the long-term targets, and then it is quite clear he has all the information to make the right calls.

"He gives you stability and the belief to continue what you are doing. But in football you can't worry about what is around the corner.

"In football management you don't even have enough time in the day to do all the things you want to do, so what's the point in worrying about things I can't control?"

The Latics travel to Arsenal tonight to play their game in hand on Q.P.R. and Blackburn. Of course a trip to the Emirates is a very difficult game but a win would see the Latics move five points clear of the relegation zone.
