Martinez backs Boselli to excel at Wigan

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has backed striker Mauro Boselli to come good in the Barclays Premier League.

Boselli arrived at the DW Stadium during the summer from Estudiantes, where he had an impressive goal-scoring record, but the Argentinian is yet to find the net for his new club in four league starts and a Carling Cup tie at Hartlepool.

"He will come good, and he has been good in many aspects and many areas," Martinez said.

"Mauro, like any other player, needs a bit of a settling-in period because the Premier League is completely different to any other league in world football.

"But if you look at the adjustments as a new player you need to make to get to being yourself in the Premier League, it takes a little bit of time. Mauro is a proven goalscorer with a fantastic talent and we will get to enjoy his football at Wigan Athletic very, very soon."

Martinez feels Boselli is already demonstrating good positional sense and steadily adapting to the rigours of Premier League football.

"More than anything, it is the physicality of the league, and that demands getting to a different level of fitness," Martinez said.

"We are working extremely hard to get him to those levels, but Mauro is a goalscorer, a finisher - he is born with it and it is something that he doesn't need to worry about.

"I have seen him get into better positions game by game and he is creating more chances.

"Whether he converts those chances or not doesn't bother me at all - if he keeps getting in better positions, he will score goals, and that is part of the transitional period that he has to get through. At the moment I have been very pleased with his work-rate and his understanding of what it takes to play in the Premier League."
