Latics boss Martinez has already commented that he would like to add two major signings to his present squad.
Rumoured to be one of these targets is Watford's Adiran Mariappa. The 25 year old defender was subject to interest from the Latics in January but chose to remain with Watford as a result of Wigan's precarious legaue position.
With Premier League safety emphatically ensured at the tail end of last season, Mariappa is said to be interested in joining up with Martinez's squad.
A fee of £2.5 million is being muted to have been agreed by the two clubs with only personal terms to be agreed.
Following the move to three centre backs, the Latics were a little stretched for numbers at the back last season and so the addition of a centre back would help reduce the strain.
The Latics are presently in Sweden on a pre-season team morale building trip.
