Maurice Lindsay is to become the new chairman of Preston North End after stepping down as a director at Wigan.[LNB] Lindsay will take over from Derek Shaw, who has voluntarily relinquished the role to assist the club in its plans to restructure following the share purchase by Deepdale PNE Holding Limited.[LNB]Shaw, who has been Preston's permanent chairman since August 2002 said: "I have been a PNE supporter all my life and will[LNB]remain so. My decision to step down is taken in the best interest of the club.[LNB]"As everyone knows, the club has been through a difficult time recently. It has benefited from the financial support of[LNB]Trevor Hemmings."[LNB]Wigan chairman Dave Whelan paid tribute to the work done by Lindsay at the DW Stadium.[LNB]He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Maurice for the help he has given the club over the past five years, where his experience has proved a great asset to us.[LNB]"I would like to wish him and Preston owner Trevor Hemmings all the very best for the future."[LNB]Lindsay joined the Wigan Athletic board in 2005 and has represented the club in an official capacity ever since.[LNB]He said: "It is with mixed feelings that I have decided to step down as a director of Wigan Athletic.[LNB]"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club. I spoke to Dave Whelan about the suggestion that I take over as chairman of PNE and as both Dave and myself are close friends of Trevor Hemmings, the owner of Preston, we both agreed that we should try and help the club, who have had a difficult time of late.[LNB]"I am delighted to be joining PNE as chairman. Everyone in football knows the history and tradition of PNE. I myself grew up in an age when the names Preston and Tom Finney were synonymous with success.[LNB]"Like everyone else in the game, I want to see PNE's image restored to the highest possible level."
