Latics unlucky losers

Chelsea 2-1 Wigan Wigan did not deserve to leave Stamford Bridge empty handed, said Charlie Nicholas in the wake of Chelsea's last-gasp 2-1 victory. The visitors appeared to have secured a point their industry merited when Olivier Kapo cancelled out John Terry's strike on 82 minutes. But Frank Lampard sent the Blues surging up to second spot in the Premier League on goal difference from Liverpool by heading home a stoppage-time winner. Nicholas felt the goal was tough on the Latics even though Chelsea controlled large passages of the game. He told Soccer Saturday: "I thought Wigan deserved something from the game. They played brilliantly for the first 25 minutes. "John Terry was a bit fortunate for Emmerson Boyce's deflected goal but he will get it; a late goal for Kapo made it 1-1 and with eight minutes to go you are sitting there thinking Wigan deserve it. "They played really well first-half; Chelsea had periods where they dominated - of course they did - but then Lampard strikes." In the build-up to his goal, Lampard appeared to lay his hands on former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot but Nicholas said he did not believe there was an infringement. "He touches Melchiot as he goes for the header but he doesn't really push him; he knows exactly where he is. "It's an awkward one for Kirkland but a beautiful header. As cool as you like he lobs it over Kirkland. It was cruel on Wigan but Chelsea bounce along into second place." The victory keeps Chelsea's title hopes alive but Nicholas believes new boss Guus Hiddink will be thankful that luck was shining on his team. "They were a bit fortunate today but as I say about every team as soon as fortune comes your way you have to grasp it and Chelsea have taken it again."
