Latics see off West Ham to announce Ramis capture

The late intervention of Latics manager Roberto Martinez is believed to have been the turning point in the transfer of Spanish defender Ivan Ramis.

The 27 year old central defender was the subject of interest from West Ham United who offered increased terms to both Mallorca and the player.

However late intervention from Latics boss Roberto Martinez is believed to have tipped the scales in favour of Wigan.

Ramis, motivated by factors other than money, clearly saw that a move to the Latics would be better for his long term career as opposed to the short term earnings potential. A view not shared by former Latic Momo Diame who joined West Ham this summer.

Understandably both Roberto Martinez and chairman Dave Whelan were delighted with the capture of Ramis for a fee believed to be in the region of £3.5 million.

Ramis has made 103 appearances for Real Mallorca since his debut in 2004 and adds strength to the defence of the Latics.
