Wigan Athletic have today been confirmed as the leading contender in the bid to offer David Beckham a return to top flight football following his achillies injury picked up whilst playing for AC Milan. The 34 year old midfielder has been ruled out of this summer's World Cup with the injury that has required surgery. Often known to finish a players career, a ruptured achillies tendon is a bad injury for anyone to suffer, however Beckham, known for his comeback abilities is keen on spending time with the Latics as he aims to win back full fitness. The bid is believed to be similar to that presently in place wiht Milan. Beckham is signed up to play for LA Galaxy but the Latics are keen to loan the England international during the American close season. This would see Beckham available to Roberto Martinez from November next year. A Beckham spokesman, Matthew McShane said: "There have been a number of rumours regarding David, but we can confirm that Wigan Athletic have made a firm offer and it is something David is very keen to discuss further." It is believed that Dave Whelan has offered to fund the players wages from his own pocket in a bid to raise the profile of the Latics even further. Although a long way from fitness, Beckham would no doubt add quality to the Latics line up and some much needed experience for the younger players to follow. CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
