Wigan have snapped up Oman international goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi on a season-long loan from Barclays Premier League rivals Bolton.

Al Habsi had limited opportunities at the Reebok Stadium but did impress when offered a run in the side which competed in the UEFA Cup in the 2007/08 season.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is convinced the 28-year-old can challenge established number one Chris Kirkland. "We need competition in every department, and Ali will certainly do that," he told the club's official website.

"He has a terrific attitude to the game and after four years in England knows all about the Premier League.

"We are delighted to welcome him on board."

The Muscat-born keeper first made his name in Europe at Lyn Oslo in Norway, and has appeared 70 times for his country.
