Latics appeal over Sammon dismissal

Wigan have appealed the red card shown to Conor Sammon in Monday's 5-0 defeat by Manchester United.

The striker was shown a straight red after a seemingly innocuous-looking clash with Michael Carrick in the first half at Old Trafford.

Wigan are expecting to hear the outcome of their appeal by Friday at the latest, meaning Sammon could be available for Saturday's clash at Stoke.

Manager Roberto Martinez said: "Conor Sammon did nothing wrong. You need to accept punishment when you do something wrong but this is a normal phase of play.

"The red card is the wrong call. It would be very difficult to see Conor missing for three games but we'll have to wait and see."
