The 42 year old is presently assistant manager with the Latics but his talks with Swansea over their vacant managerial position are said to have broken down.
Chairman of the Welsh club, Huw Jenkins said of the decision to appoint a new manager: "We are weighing up our options. But there is no timescale apart from having the new manager in place for the start of the season."Understandably Jones was keen to speak with Swansea and was keen on the chance to test his managerial talents.
It is unknown at present why the talks have broken down.
