New Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez will find himself under pressure from the off as he embarks on his maiden Premier League season. The significance of the 24-year-old playmaker being Roberto Martinez's first signing only four days after the Spaniard took over as manager should not be underestimated. Martinez built a reputation for flowing, attractive football while at Swansea and he will aim to transfer that to the top flight. In order to do that he has to change the mindset of the squad, and Gomez - who played a key role during his year-long loan at Swansea last season - is the man the Latics manager is looking towards to direct operations in midfield and dictate the play. "Jordi is that sort of player that is very hard to find in modern-day football," said Martinez. "He is a talented footballer who is pleasing on the eye, very stylish and with an eye for goal. "You can see his background; he developed at Barcelona and Espanyol and he is a technical player. He is the one who needs to get on the ball and control the tempo of the game. All the fans are in for a big treat."
