Ferguson slams 'naive' Lilywhites

Darren Ferguson claims Preston should have stopped Wigan's Carling Cup match-winner Charles N'Zogbia on Wednesday night - by fouling him.[LNB] Ferguson felt midfielder Danny Mayor could have hacked down the Frenchman as he broke in injury time to cap Wigan's dramatic late comeback in the third-round tie at the DW Stadium.[LNB]Preston had led through Keith Treacy's 23rd-minute goal but were beaten 2-1 as Jordi Gomez levelled on 87 minutes and N'Zogbia settled it as extra-time loomed.[LNB]Ferguson said: "The second goal was so naive it was incredible.[LNB]"All Danny has got to do is bring the lad down. We can see what is going to go on and as soon as he didn't do that, they were in.[LNB]"Both goals were stoppable. Individual mistakes cost us the game.[LNB]"I couldn't really see a way of them getting through and they huffed and puffed.[LNB]"Obviously they had one or two opportunities but they were two awful goals for us to lose.[LNB]"Andy's [goalkeeper Andy Lonergan] been done at the near post and Danny Mayor, he has got to foul the lad, take a booking for the team."[LNB]Preston, struggling at the bottom end of the Championship, had chances to put the game beyond their Premier League hosts as Paul Coutts twice hit the post.[LNB]Ferguson added: "I'm not looking for excuses but we just aren't getting any luck - Coutts hit the bar, post - it's game over if that went in.[LNB]"Again we have lost a game late on, people will accuse us of not being fit enough, nonsense.[LNB]"One thing I would say is the last 20 minutes we didn't keep it well enough, we invited pressure. We have got to have more composure."[LNB]The manner of victory should lift Wigan after a similarly poor start to the campaign in the top flight.[LNB]Latics lacked a cutting edge in the first half but the introduction of N'Zogbia at the interval changed the complexion of the game.[LNB]N'Zogbia, who saw a move to Birmingham collapse last month, ran continually at Preston and had missed a good chance moments before playing a one-two with James McCarthy and slotting the winner.[LNB]Boss Roberto Martinez said: "It is quite clear the talent Charles has got.[LNB]"The way he has acted since the window has closed has been an example for everyone.[LNB]"He has talent and many would pay money to watch him play football.[LNB]"More importantly he worked for the team extremely hard and, with his build-up towards the game, his day today has been sensational."[LNB]Martinez brought in a handful of new faces over the summer and felt his players showed greater signs of cohesion as the game went on.[LNB]The Spaniard added: "I felt we were very lethargic in the first half, Preston were a lot quicker.[LNB]"In the second half I was very proud of a group of players that care about gelling together.[LNB]"Preston had a couple of counter-attacks but after that it was all good, composed possession."
